History of the
San Diego British Car Club Council

In the golden motoring days of 1980, a spark of inspiration from Robert Segui, the Austin Healey Club’s Activities Chairman, ignited a movement that would unite British car enthusiasts across San Diego. At the time, nine British car clubs were actively hosting road rallies, marque-specific shows, and scenic tours. But Segui envisioned something more—a grand gathering that would bring all these clubs together under one Union Jack.

The First Show & Picnic: Where It All Began

That vision took shape on September 21, 1980, at Dos Picos Park in Ramona, where the newly formed San Diego British Car Club Council (SDBCCC) hosted its first British Car Show and Picnic. The turnout was impressive: 130 vehicles rolled in, representing a proud spectrum of British motoring.

The day was more than just polished chrome and gleaming bonnets. It was a celebration of community and creativity, featuring:

  • Picnics and volleyball matches

  • Fan belt toss and spark plug fitting contests

  • Spare tire changing races

  • Awards for each marque, plus whimsical honors like:

    • “People’s Choice”

    • “Prince of Darkness”

    • “Best British Beater”

    • “Best Picnic Display”

Participants received dash plaques, a program booklet, and flyers, making it a truly memorable affair.

A Tradition That Rolls On

Since that inaugural event, the SDBCCC has remained a steadfast presence in the San Diego car scene, hosting San Diego British Car Day every year—save for one pause during the COVID pandemic. Over the decades, the event has graced venues such as:

  • Del Mar Fairgrounds Track

  • Fairbrook Farms in Bonsall

  • Admiral Baker Field

  • Four Points Sheraton

  • Seaport Village

  • Spanish Landing

  • Coronado’s Tidelands Park

In the 1990s, the show reached its peak with over 400 British cars, trucks, and motorcycles in attendance, turning heads and warming hearts.

Rolling British Car Day: Springtime on the Move

In recent years, the Council added a new tradition: Rolling British Car Day, held each spring. This scenic drive through San Diego’s backroads serves as a spirited warm-up to the fall show, keeping the wheels turning and the community connected.
